Dietitians on LPR or Laryngopharyngeal Reflux
Here’s some background information on Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR), as per our registered dietitians.
Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), or informally known as ‘silent reflux’, is caused by the sphincters at the top and bottom of the esophagus not functioning as they should. This results in stomach acid seeping back up the esophagus into the throat, causing reflux-type symptoms, most often voice hoarseness, throat clearing and/or difficulty swallowing.
Because LPR involves malfunction of both esophageal sphincters, when stomach acid surpasses the upper sphincter, irritation occurs more so in the top part of the esophagus, and so symptoms present more commonly in the throat.
LPR gets its nickname due to the fact that it does not necessarily present itself like other forms of reflux, such as gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), where classic symptoms of heartburn and chest pain are more commonly experienced.
Once LPR is confirmed through various diagnostic tactics, there are a few treatment options to consider, many of which relate to diet and lifestyle factors. This includes dietary changes (i.e. full or partial elimination of common reflux triggers), weight loss, exercise, adjusting timing of fluid and/or food intake, and reducing alcohol and/or caffeine intake.
LPR may also require medication for its management, depending on severity. In rare cases, surgery might be advised if someone is experiencing LPR as a result of a hiatal hernia. Unlike GERD, however, LPR is more successfully managed with lifestyle changes alone.
For this reason it’s imperative to seek the support of a dietitian for LPR.
How can a dietitian and nutritionist help manage Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR)?
A registered dietitian and nutritionist can help manage LPR in the following ways:
- Because many of the lifestyle-related treatment options for LPR pertain to diet, a registered dietitian (RD) is a valuable health professional to consult. A dietitian can provide a nutritional analysis of one’s current diet to determine triggers and assist with providing education and creating a plan of action to help reduce LPR symptoms and prevent their recurrence.
- Dietitians and nutritionists can also provide insight around portion sizes and how often to be eating, in addition to timing of fluid intake and physical activity, in order to optimize the management of LPR.
- Dietitians have the knowledge to guide people with LPR around supplementation as well. There are some supplements that may or may not be warranted for LPR treatment, and/or contradict medicinal treatment.
- Dietitians can also provide follow-up sessions to monitor progress, address additional concerns, answer questions and make ongoing adjustments to the plan, if necessary.
- Address any other co-existing chronic disease and/or conditions, needs and goals.
- Have concerns addressed and questions answered by a registered dietitian and nutritionist.
- And more.
