What is the difference between a nutritionist and dietitian?

Nutritionist

Please keep in mind that not all nutritionists are the same, as the term is often unregulated.

A registered nutritionist is a professional trained to work one-on-one with clients, catering to each individual, perhaps creating a meal plan specific to his or her lifestyle and goals. As a result, he or she may effectively help you by taking a multi-faceted approach based on your food sensitivities, diet, needs, lifestyle, budget, etc.

In addition, there are a wide variety of nutritionists, each with a different designation and approach. At JM Nutrition we have: nutritional therapy practitioner, clinical nutritionist, functional nutritionist, holistic nutritionist and certified nutritional practitioner.

Dietitian

A dietitian is a regulated term and a reputable degree. Dietitians often work with policy makers and institutions, though some do work in private practice. Registered Dietitians are regulated health professionals accountable to provincial regulatory bodies.

The bottom line is that both, a registered nutritionist and registered dietitian, can help you achieve your goal. It’s important to find a practitioner who is the most qualified to help you get to the root of your specific, individual problem. The decision is yours.

At JM Nutrition we have both, Registered Nutritionists and Registered Dietitians (RD) readily available.

Are you covered by OHIP?

No, JM Nutrition Registered Nutritionists and Registered Dietitians are not covered by OHIP.

We are a private practice nutrition counselling service, which prides itself on thorough, supportive and exceptional client service with highly personalized care to maximize the chances of reaching your goal(s).

As a private service, we offer great flexibility, exclusive support, in-depth counselling sessions and many tools and resources along the way.

Why do you charge the prices you charge?

Good question.

JM Nutrition prices are competitive and very reasonable considering the years of experience, research, education and value that we offer.

The packaged session and the accompanying meal plans are highly personalized and built from scratch (no generic, cookie-cutter approach here). Please keep in mind that assembling a customized meal plan is time consuming and for this reason many nutritionists and dietitians do not offer them.

We, on the other hand, feel that a meal plan is enormously important and can successfully guide you in reaching your specific goal(s) by providing structure and healthy food options, leaving no room for guesswork.

In addition, the meal plans are accompanied by support (in times of uncertainty), whereby you can bring a list of questions to each session and obtain answers, so you can get the most value for your money and maximize the chances of getting the desired results.

We also provide numerous recommendations, suggestions, updates, visual guidelines (serving sizes, identifying carbs, how to read a food label, healthy eating, weight loss and others–all unique) as well as access to healthy recipes.

Paying attention to small details throughout the process, making ongoing adjustments, also differentiates our approach from many of the competitors.

Please feel free to take a look at the Reviews page, where many of our former clients share their stories, to learn more about the value that the packaged sessions bring.

Why do you offer packaged sessions?

Packaged sessions ensure that you receive the support you need to reach your goal(s).

Most people feel the need to have more ongoing support during which they can ask various questions during counselling sessions, receive numerous tips and feedback, perhaps modify or tweak the meal plan, address accompanying symptoms, and so on.

Sustained help and accountability simply maximize the chances of success.

Besides, a multi-session package brings better value than paying for sessions individually.

What is holistic nutrition? What does a holistic nutritionist do?

A holistic nutritionist undertakes a natural approach to health and takes into account many factors that affect your health. It’s important to ensure that you look good and feel good from the inside out.

In order to do that we have to take a look at your health history, specific goals, lifestyle, current eating habits, food preferences, tendencies, cravings, budget and so on. Only then we can get to the root of the problem and set the stage for long-term success.

I can retrieve nutritional information online. Why should I pay to come see you?

Nowadays, an overwhelming amount of information about nutrition is found online, much of it conflicting and some simply untrue.

A registered nutritionist or registered dietitian will sort through the confusing information, and present you with the ideal plan suitable just for you.

Not everyone who offers advice online is registered or qualified. Many contributors may offer advice from their personal experience, which does not necessarily mean that their approach will work for you.

Working with a registered professional will help you debunk various myths, offer you years of expertise, the most current evidence-based information, easy access to a number of valuable resources, recommendations and accountability.

How long will it take for me to see results? What is the success rate?

This depends on your goal and largely how well you adhere to the counsel you receive.

In addition, we are made differently and we have differing dispositions and tendencies. As a result, the speed and success rate differ from person to person.

Results cannot be guaranteed, but rest assured that anyone who follows our approach and recommendations notices positive changes soon after.

Examples of feedback from our clients include: “I feel lighter; I have more energy, especially in the afternoon; my sugar cravings are subdued or more controlled and my clothes feel more comfortable.”

Digestion, significant weight loss or combination of nutrition- and health-related concerns may take a little longer as these can be more serious and complicated conditions, requiring longer-term care.

To read more about the many success stories, please read some of the client reviews in which they describe their experience in some detail.

What if my schedule is too busy or I live out of town, can I still enlist your help?

Definitely!

Although we are based in the Greater Toronto Area (offices in Toronto, Mississauga and Vaughan) we can arrange a phone session, a Skype call, a FaceTime, Zoom or Google Meet meeting. We can follow up via email as well.

More and more customers conduct their sessions via these means. We have many clients throughout Ontario and beyond.

I am not sure if I’d want to commit right away. Do I have time to decide?

Certainly.

If you’re like me, you probably need to chat, get a feel for the person and talk things out to see if you’re comfortable with proceeding. You can do so by phone or via email. We move on only when you feel comfortable and all your questions have been answered.

We do not, however, offer free in-person consultations as the demands of all our schedules simply do not allow for that.

I don’t know how to cook and/or I don’t want to cook. Can you still help me?

Absolutely.

We will construct your meal plan based on your budget, lifestyle, goals, sensitivities and taste preferences that will help you make smarter and healthier choices when eating out, ordering in or on-the-go.

We can also provide access to simple recipes and ideas, if you do decide to cook.

More on our meal plans

Can I still eat out and drink alcohol on your plan?

Yes. Everything is in moderation.

Besides, we work around your lifestyle and create customized meal plans based on your individual situation. If you don’t want to give up drinking alcohol altogether, we will adapt accordingly.

That said, the more closely you adhere to the plan, the quicker you will reach the desired goal, which may mean cutting down on alcohol consumption.

Realistically speaking, not everyone is willing to give up all of their vices or life’s pleasures. We will definitely find a reasonable compromise and devise a plan accordingly.

We also encourage you to take a look at the JM Nutrition blog where I have written about how to select alcohol and what type, and still meet your health and wellness goals.

What is the best diet? Should I eat low-fat food?

Can you create a low-carb or keto diet plan?

Yes, we can help to create a modified keto diet plan (if that’s the way you have chosen to go), one that is healthy, nutritionally-balanced and sustainable in the long-term.

Although the keto diet has some merit, please keep in mind that the typical keto plan you may find online is fraught with drawbacks and may be detrimental to  your health and overall being in the long-run.
