Dietitians on Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
Important information on Mast Cell Activation Syndrome by our registered dietitians:
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a more recently classified condition that has increased in prevalence over the years.
It often presents as allergy-like symptoms, which can be severe, as mast cells play a part in the body’s normal immune response, but become overactive in MCAS.
Unfortunately, it is a condition that is difficult to definitively diagnose, and there is no group of specialists alone that have the expertise to test for and distinguish it from other conditions.
Often, people with MCAS will consult several specialists to get closer to a confirmed diagnosis, if it can even be confirmed. It is therefore an area that lacks overall research.
As a result, there is no set diet that dietitians can recommend that is targeted or guaranteed to help individuals with MCAS manage their symptoms. And, it is unfortunately a condition where guidance available through social media succeeds scientific research.
Because of this, many people end up unintentionally restricting their diets, risking malnutrition and becoming underweight.
That said, dietitians can provide some guidance around MCAS.
How can a dietitian and nutritionist for MCAS help?
A dietitian and nutritionist for MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) can help in the following ways:
- Registered dietitians (RDs) can be a very valuable tool to help people with MCAS determine their own personal triggers and establish a diet plan that works for them, while trying to optimize their nutrient intake and enjoyment of food.
- Some individuals with MCAS see success with implementing a low-histamine diet developed by a dietitian, or a modified version of it. However, due to this diet’s very restrictive nature, it is integral that it be implemented short-term, and that a reintroduction phase is initiated as soon as possible. Dietitians can help guide this process and offer suggestions to ensure nutritional needs are being met.
- Many people with MCAS can present with gastrointestinal (GI) issues similar to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For that reason, a low-FODMAP diet, or modified version of it, has been shown to be helpful for some as well. Working with a dietitian and nutritionist can help an individual with MCAS determine what might be the most effective dietary approach and strategy for them.
- Due to the bulk of misleading information on social media, many people with MCAS may feel pushed to manage their condition as holistically as possible. Although diet and supplementation have been shown to play a therapeutic part in the management of MCAS, it is important to work with medical professionals to address the physical manifestations of this condition as well.
- Provide follow-up sessions to monitor response and progress, address additional concerns and adjust the plan, if necessary.
- Have a dietitian answer any questions and address concerns that you may have regarding Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, as well as specific food products.
- Receive follow-up session with a dietitian.
- And more.
