Dietitians on Lupus

Important information on Lupus by our registered dietitians:

Lupus is an auto-immune disorder that involves the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacking healthy cells. It results in inflammation that can impact organs, joints and blood cells.

Although there is no cure for lupus, there are treatments to help manage symptoms, in addition to dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes.

That said, dietitians can provide some guidance around Lupus.

How can a dietitian and nutritionist for lupus help?

A dietitian and nutritionist for lupus can help in the following ways:

  • Carefully analyze your current diet with lupus in mind.
  • Help implement the Mediterranean Diet (MEDI Diet), or a modified version of it, is often suggested to help those with autoimmune disorders, like Lupus, better manage their condition. The MEDI Diet is a well-researched anti-inflammatory style of eating that can be adapted to suit each individual with lupus and its complications.
  • In some cases, help adjust current diet, if restrictions or special considerations pertaining to hypertension (HTN), osteoporosis, decreased kidney function and/or digestive issues are present.
  • Perhaps implement low-glycemic index (GI) diet to help manage certain lupus symptoms as well, such as fatigue.
  • Discuss some ‘immune-supporting’ foods and supplements that may not be advisable to consume for those with lupus.
  • Working with a registered dietitian (RD) for lupus can make implementing a MEDI and/or low-GI diet, while navigating any potential restrictions pertaining to lupus, much easier.
  • A registered dietitian can also advise you around any necessary supplementation that may help to support lupus management as well, in addition to navigating any medication side effects (i.e. weight gain re: steroid use).
  • Create a personalized meal plan or guide around lupus.
  • Provide follow-up sessions to monitor response and progress, address additional concerns and adjust the plan, if necessary.
  • Have a dietitian answer any questions and address concerns that you may have regarding lupus, within the dietitian’s scope of practice.
  • Receive follow-up session with a dietitian.
  • And more.
