Dietitians on Post-Cholecystectomy

Important information on Post-Cholecystectomy by our registered dietitians:

A cholecystectomy is a medical procedure that involves removing one’s gallbladder. It is typically the treatment option for individuals with gallbladder disease that cannot be–or can no longer be–managed by lifestyle adjustments.

Gallbladder disease involves inflammation, gallstones and/or sludge building up in the gallbladder, which can cause significant pain and discomfort. It is typically exacerbated by higher fat foods.

When surgery (cholecystectomy) becomes the next treatment option for gallbladder disease, it can result in some temporary post-op dietary adjustments.

The gallbladder’s main role in our digestive system is to store bile that is created by the liver, and release it when digesting food, particularly foods that contain fat. When your gallbladder is removed, you are still creating bile, but you will no longer release it on an ‘as needed’ basis. There is instead a constant small trickle of bile going into your small intestine.

As a result, diarrhea and stomach upset can occur when eating high-fat foods/meals post-op cholecystectomy, until your body adapts and learns to compensate for this change.

As a result, it may be important to seek the services of a dietitian who can provide some guidance around post-cholecystectomy.
