Dietitians on SAD

Important information on SAD by our registered dietitians:

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that is typically experienced in the fall and winter months, and generally resolves in the spring and summer. For some, however, SAD can be experienced in the warmer months as well.

When experienced in the colder months, it is a disorder that results in decreased energy, mood, concentration, and can interfere with appetite and cause food cravings as well. Weight gain can be a common side effect as a result.

When experienced in the warmer months, SAD can actually cause reduced appetite and weight loss, along with difficulty sleeping and irritability.

Our dietitians and nutritionists can provide some guidance around SAD and related health concerns.

How can an SAD dietitian and nutritionist help?

A registered dietitian and nutritionist can implement a variety of interventions to help manage seasonal affective disorder. Here’s how:

  • Have your current diet assessed by a nutritionist and dietitian who works with clients who suffer from SAD.
  • Examine several factors that can contribute to SAD, with particular dietary relevance of vitamin D deficiency.
  • Outline that there are multiple treatment options and lifestyle adjustments that can help an individual with SAD manage their symptoms, diet being one.
  • Discuss the potential implementation of an anti-inflammatory diet, as research, although up and coming, shows promise in the correlation between eating and the prevention and management of depression.
  • Discuss various vitamins and minerals as studies also suggest that certain micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) play a part in both the prevention, severity and treatment of depression-related disorders like SAD.
  • Working with a registered dietitian (RD) can educate individuals on these nutrients to help them manage their condition, as well as discuss any necessary supplementation.
  • Many with SAD experience cravings for carbohydrate and sugar-dense foods, as these foods can cause temporary energy boosts and release ‘feel good’ hormones. A dietitian for SAD or an eating disorder dietitian can help individuals manage these cravings and address weight management (weight loss or gain) as appropriate.
  • Have a personalized meal guide created.
  • In addition to working with a dietitian and nutritionist to help manage seasonal affective disorder, conduct sessions with a gastrointestinal health dietitian and learn about the connection between the gut and the brain.
  • Take advantage of our weight loss dietitians to help you achieve a healthy weight, if desired.
  • Work with a sports dietitian to help ensure you are fuelled for physical activity, which can help alleviate anxiety symptoms.
  • Address other conditions.
  • Provide follow-up sessions to monitor progress, address additional concerns, answer questions and adjust the plan, if necessary.
  • Work in conjunction with other health professionals as nutritional counselling, in combination with therapy, is one of the most effective strategies for mental health.
  • And more.
